Chairs with scars feel stronger, fabric and leather couches we don’t need polish, we need real. I’ve balanced takeaway boxes on a mismatched chair, and the furniture was part of the night. Every warehouse flat tells the same story, and students rely on it. We found ourselves in Smithers showroom, and living room chairs and sofas the place was full of funky retro chairs.

Mass production doesn’t care, but funky chairs grow with you. every stain means another night. By the end of the year, the dodgy landlord fades away, but the armchair stays in your mind. When you start student life, don’t waste time on the soulless new. Make space for a classic seat, and watch it age with you.
