Throughout history, people have been drawn to the beauty, rarity, and significance of coins. Some individuals have taken a particular interest in collecting coins, often going to great lengths to acquire the most valuable and historically significant pieces. Here are some of the most notable coin collectors in history.


One of the earliest recorded coin collectors was the Roman Emperor Trajan, who ruled from 98 to 117 AD. Trajan was a connoisseur of art and architecture, and his love for coins was evident in the great number of medals and coins that were issued during his reign. His fascination with coins was not limited to Roman issues; he also collected coins from other civilizations, including the Greeks and the Egyptians.

He was a great admirer of art and numismatics, and his love for coins led himself to establish the Royal Cabinet of Coins and Medals in Paris. In the 18th century, the British collector and banker, George Edwards, amassed an impressive collection of ancient Greek and Roman coins. His collection, which included over 1,000 pieces, was considered one of the finest in Europe. Another famous coin collector of the 18th century was the American revolutionary leader, Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson collected everything from ancient Greek pottery to rare coins, but it was his collection of ancient Roman coins that was particularly significant. His collection of over 200 coins spanned several centuries, from the Roman Republic to the Byzantine Empire. Today, many of Jefferson's coins are on display at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.


In the 19th century, the British collector, Earl of Sandwich, was known for his extensive collection of Chinese coins. His collection, which included over 10,000 coins, was considered one of the most comprehensive in the world. Mowbray was not only a collector but also a connoisseur of Chinese art and culture. His collection of Chinese coins is now housed at the British Museum.

In the 20th century, the American collector, James Farley, amassed an impressive collection of coins from around the world. Eliasberg's collection consisted of over 4,500 coins, including every coin ever minted in the United States. In 1953, Eliasberg sold his collection to the Franklin Mint for a reported $2.45 million. Today, his collection is considered the largest and most comprehensive collection of U.S. coins in the world.


These are just a few examples of the many famous coin collectors throughout history. Their love for coins not only reflected their passion for art and history but also demonstrated their commitment to collecting and preserving the past.
